Who Am I?

Hello, I am Matthew and I believe we can all Move Well, in whatever capacity that we are able.

I have spent my life and years dedicated to movement, exercise and helping others. Throughout my youth and adult life I have been a keen sports enthusiast trying a whole range of different activities. From traditional sports like rugby, football, cricket, running, grass hockey to more alternative things like rock climbing snowboarding, mountain biking, skateboarding, windsurfing, sailing and swimming. I’ve loved it all, throw me a ball and I will give you a game.

I’m also a dog Dad of three lovely pooches and we have hiked Sheffield Peaks and Scottish Highlands. Get me outside and you know that I will be smiling.

All of these adventures and passions have taught me the importance of our bodies and feeling strong and supported within them. I have recuperated from my fair share of injuries in my time and I have experienced the difficulty and struggles that bodily imbalances can create. Experiencing this has encouraged me to help others find balance and strength within themselves.

Professionally I have worked as Nurse on and off for the past 10 years. During my career I have seen the many ailments, aches and pains that plague us. I have realised through my own physical practice and education how many of the physical symptoms can be mitigated and prevented through training, strengthening and rebalancing the body.

Due to this I created Move Well With Matthew in order to help people move better and feel stronger.

Driven by curiosity and built to help you MOVE WELL. This is your opportunity to engage with your body and start to fix old patterns of painful movement. Let’s connect and move together.

My Education

With a background of nursing, functional patterns training, followed by training with the biomechanics institute I offer a thoughtful and structured approach to movement that is practical and progressive.

Tailored to the individual’s specific needs.  I apply a problem solving road map to what is going on within the body and then work with you to solve it.

My Approach

I aim to help reduce people’s pain by improving how their body moves and handles load.

My work is focussed on biomechanics which is the study of how the body moves in real life.

Rather than isolating muscles and chasing symptoms I look at the whole body and how it works together during everyday movements. Standing, walking, lifting and breathing.

When movement patterns are inefficient, the body compensates over time often leading to stiffness, aches and recurring pain. By gradually restoring more natural and efficient movement, strength improves and joints feel better and confidence returns within the body.

It is a more nuanced and specific approach. In order to get change in the body, it takes time. One session isn’t going to change someone’s body completely. It requires a bit of a reeducation around whatever someone’s specific issue may be. From that re-education they can then implement that into their daily life.

What it looks like is assessing someone’s posture, how they are moving in their gait cycle, so how they are walking. And I look for if they have any specific issues, such as a shoulder issue. Looking at what is going around that issue and looking at what triggers their pain and then breaking down the pattern around that movement.

The Process

It is a more nuanced and specific approach.

In order to get change in the body, it takes time. One session isn’t going to change someone’s body completely. It requires a bit of a reeducation around whatever someone’s specific issue may be.

From that re-education they can then implement that into their daily life.

It involves assessing someone’s posture as they stand and as they move.

How they are moving in their gait cycle, how they are walking, tells me a lot. I look for if they have any specific issues, such as a shoulder, knee or ankle issue. I explore what is going around that struggle point. I look at what triggers their pain and then break down the pattern around that movement. We then work together to initiate a series of exercises that will strengthen, rebalance and redistribute tension and improve overall mobility.

Everything is connected and improving one area can help to improve the body as a whole.
